I am certainly late to this party I feel stupid not having read these before now. This book was fantastic. Where can you get a book with Demons, Angels, Witches, and Gargoyles. I love how the author is able to wrap the reader up in the storyline and hold them hostage from the beginning to the end of the book. The story flowed seamless and without any lull moments that would lead a reader to get somewhat bored. The characters are very complex and given 3 dimentional qualities. The characters are not always black or white. I loved the character Dayton. The poor girl lost her mother and father and her and her sister are forced to go live with their crazy aunt who runs a religious sect. Dayton finds out on her birthday that she isn't only human she is also half angel, but she finds this after her aunt makes a deal with a demon and she is thrust into a world fighting for their lives with another half demon Marcas. This demon is definitely hot hot hot. He is blood bonded with Dayton and it brings with on the fight between Marcas mom, the demon queen Lilith, the keepers of the Solomon treasures. I highly recommend this book and all other books written by R.K. Ryals she has the amazing ability of capturing a story and letting it take flight into many directions.Tags : Redemption [R.K. “Redemption” turned out to be quite the surprise. A reliable bookworm friend of mine who share similar taste in books and genres, recommended this to me, but because I’ve read too many less than stellar self-pub books, I kept shoving “Redemption” to the bottom of my to-read list. I can now happily report that I finished this book in less than two days, and it is definitely one of the better self-pub books out there. I doubt I’ll be reading the rest of this series, but I honestly did enjoy this book.
This is truly a terrific read, and with so many references to pop culture it is easy to see where the author got her inspiration for this book (series?). As a reader who enjoyed three out of the four books in the Twilight Saga, I noticed a lot of similarities. For one, there is the inevitable start of a love-triangle, the vampires demons with their fangs and lust for blood; the light shield Dayton was trained to use hours before they went into battle, going to Italy to find “the ring”, and the twins (brother and sister) setup reminiscent of Twilight’s “Volturi”, and much, much more. With all this in mind, I can already see where the rest of the series is headed. I don’t really think this is fanfic, but with so many similarities to what I’ve already read in popular mainstream paranormal books and my favorite tv shows such as “Buffy” and “Angel”, it’s hard to ignore the obvious.
But, this book also has a lot of new things to offer and I was intrigued by the flying carpet, for one. The characters are all well-rounded, though I didn’t really connect with Dayton, the female lead. I understood her attitude and why she continually lashed out and pushed the limits, but I was also put-off by her cussing, her annoying habit to constantly (and I mean CONSTANTLY) bite her tongue until it bled, and her obsession with dumdum lollipops (which made me wonder what her teeth was going to look like in a few years time the way she was devouring these lollipops). I tried to warm up to her, and at the very end she did kick a butt or three, but her crying about everything and moping about what a crappy life she has, it was hard to see her as a strong character. No matter how the author described her, her actions simply weren’t those of a strong, female lead I could be proud of. Each one of the secondary characters had their fifteen minutes of fame, and whether I liked them or not, I can’t argue that it is evident the author spent a lot of time developing each and every character, good and evil.
If you’re new to the paranormal genre and looking for something light to read, but something that would pack a punch and set your imagination on fire, this book is what I’d recommend. The writing is superb and is part of what makes it stand out from other self-pub books. I found the angst and the build-up to the finale a little too drawn out and slightly overdone, but it keeps the plot moving. The author’s attention to detail, not only to world-building but also to every emotion the main character is feeling at any given point, is amazing. As the proverbial saying goes no stone was left unturned. Despite the minor issues I had, I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to others.
Pros Great story, great characters
Cons Seemed rushed in some areas
Overall rating Good book, would recommend it
Impressions Good characters, rushed story
Review
So I picked this up as a free book on a list I got my e-mail. I am glad I did. I really enjoyed reading it. It was definitely something that fit into my normal reading lists.
The characters are great, and let me just say that I loved that the main characters was named Dayton. It's not a normal name for a character and I love that about this book. The names aren't just the normal, run of the mill names. She is a good base character as well. She is strong when she needs to be but at the same time she has her vulnerabilities. You want your characters to be real, not some perfect person.
This book was a great start to this series though. The idea behind it was well thought out but I think that the author wanted to get more into the first novel and pushed to hard in some areas. That is why it felt rushed for me. I think that if she had really planned out the series she could have stretched it out more. That is just my opinion. I know that she has a whole series now, but this was still rushed to me.
Dayton Blainey isn't what she thought she is; mortal. Tricked by her aunt to be blood bonded with the first son of Cain and Lilith, Dayton has to find some ring that will sever the bond between her and Marcas, maybe.
Here's what I liked it was edited. Monroe, mostly.
Here's what I didn't like Dayton. She's a screeching, whining, combative, and immature teenager who cries at a drop of a hat at anything. She is not likable in any sense. The writing was okay, but that's as good as it got. It took too long to get the to bit where Dayton finds out what she really is.The story was kind of boring and riddled with the same tropes we see all the time We're bonded by blood. We can feel each other's emotions and pain. ect, ect ect. Marcas waves his hands a lot for things to appear. It's basically a Genie blink.
While I finished the book, I wanted to give up many times while reading it. I'm surprised I didn't.
