I have read quite a lot of books, many considered classics, masterpieces and massively influential- and The Darkangel remains one of my absolute favourite novels. Pierce writes with a unique style that transcends age barrier- accessible to young adults and older children, yet still intriguing for older readers. The world she creates is mesmerising and described in such detail it is almost visible to the reader. She grounds her fantasy in a sense of realism, her mythology complicatedly simple. Miss Pierce also creates identifiable characters- characters that grow to an extent that you almost feel you have grown with them. This is true particularly for the protagonist, Aeriel, who gains such assurance in herself by the end of the first novel that she is willing to sacrifice her own life for what she believes to be right- and continues to gain independence, wisdom and valor by the ned of the trilogy, while retaining her original qualities of humility, mercy and patience. Every heartbreak she experiences echoes through the reader- I almost always have tears when reading the ending. What truly makes this spectacular is the way everything is unified. Pierce has a way of weaving every detail together, and once something is mentioned it is never forgotten or dismissed as irrelevant- everything has a purpose. It is this that allows the reader to so easily be immersed in this brilliantly bizarre world, and to connect with the people, creatures and places of the setting.
It is a shame that a piece of literature so unique and engaging has faded into obscurity, as it truly deserves to be named at least a children's classic.

I have loved this series since I was a teenager. Very imaginative and unique! I would love to see a movie of her books some day.
Love this trilogy but they gave it in separate books not the one book shown that holds all three.
I remembered that in high school I found this book and read it. I did like it enough to read it 3+ times but then I bought it and was NOT surprised to find that it was a little cheesy. It was exciting and suspenseful but it wasn't written very well. A real page turner if you can get through the repeated imagery and paragraphs that are unnecessary.
Dystopia, fantasy, soul-sucking vampires, redeeming love, character development via adventure, fairy tale creatures, tough choices, hard core science fiction, strong female lead, a lyrical narrative - this series has it all! I can't say more because.. Well ... Spoilers!
Love this imaginative magical trilogy. The characters are unforgettable. It makes me think how love of others can make us capable of amazing feats of heroism and sacrifice and how those acts change us entirely.
This is a story that greatly influenced my idea of a good fantasy adventure as a child. I was happy to be able to get a copy again to share with my daughter. I particularly like how the initial villian is as much a victim as the heroine is, and how the heroine is a strong character that has a larger destiny than it seems when we first meet her. It is well worth reading several times.

This time around, however, when I wanted to actually buy the book (before, it was always the library), I was really excited to see all three books bound together in one edition on !

Of course, I bought this volume, and I really cherish it! I re-read the trilogy again, and I know I will re-read it yet again! This is really a treasure to have... and it was inexpensive too!
