Page adroitly makes the history of Portugal and Lisbon feel like you are reading a historical novel. His background research is phenomenal and nearly intimidating, as you ask yourself where did
he find this fact, how did he determine this set of sequences?
The whole world needs to be better educated as to the significance of the Portuguese in
the development of the present world. They were leaders in almost every area.

Very good overall history of Portugal. Before you visit the country, read the history It makes the visit more interesting.
Great book, too bad it's out of print.
Interesting read!
Excellent
Outstanding narrative, very high quality and at the same time surprising revelations to usual Portuguese history narrative, done by a non Portuguese, verybhigh qualified person, with a solid background..., I knew it from day one and enjoyed reading it again...,
The Country is small. In the Religion of Money (today's Western most powerful one) that means less than worthy of attention (unless some international market sharks have concerns over this or that government policy or less rightist options).
However, the reality is that there is and always was interest in taking knowledge of the human and social potential of countries like this.
Many things on Earth have origin outside the countries and cultures currently leading the World. Whether the media and Historians really care about it or not.
It is an act of Culture to read this attractive book.
Very nice historical account describing the evolution of Portugal, it's conquests and the inventiveness of its people. The book is a good wide brush and has an easy-to-ready -albeit superficial- journalistic style. But the author is a well respected British journalist who lived there and fell in love with it; and he never claims that the book is anything more than his own, brief historical account of Portugal's historical evolution.
