This was a page turner. I loved it! I love murder mysteries, and this not only has murder and suspense, but also romance. Not the formulaic kind of romance that I don't like to read with its clichés and plethora of adverbs, but a romance that has as many interesting twists and turns as the plot does. The dialogue is natural, the prose flows. The characters feel like real people. The place also feels like a character. Padre Island, Texas, comes alive in Kilgore's skilled authorial hands.

She's a master of dialogue and lean descriptive prose. This passage in the first chapter illustrates her skill with description that always heightens place, character, and plot.

A mosquito buzzed her ear, and she brushed it away. Someone else could be its dinner. For now, no one paid her much attention, at least not from this direction. Flames lit the sky, joined by knotty fingers of black smoke against the royal blue of early night. Firefighters worked everywhere pulling yellow hoses that slithered across the parking lot....The familiar apathy returned. She hated it, wanted to kick it away, drown it in the sea. But no matter what she tried, it remained. Short-lived panic jumped up from time to time, but fear, love, anger--she hadn't felt any of them since she killed the man who murdered her father.

Wow! An incredibly visual scene, packed with emotion and suspense. Summer Newcombe is a beautiful blonde who is in the federal witness protection program; who has had more than one alias in her young life. As the story begins, she hasn't been very long in Padre Island, Texas, her current relocation, when a fire erupts in the Pink Torilla where she works as a waitress--and thus meets the handsome fire captain Gabe Duran. Metaphorically speaking, sparks instantly fly between them. Kilgore does know how to use literary elements to create sizzling scenes!

She also writes credible and lively dialogue to move the story forward. In this scene near the end of the book is a fascinating exchange between Summer and Gabe where the reader is treated to an interesting historical tidbit that plays off their feelings for each other.

"I didn't know. Were they savage?"
"Not so much to each other. But they ate the flesh of their enemies."
"You're kidding again, right?"

"Let that be a lesson to you. Never eat your enemy's flesh. Yuck."

Tension. Suspense. They're walking toward a confrontation with the evil protagonist, Jim Packett who is one of the many colorful characters in the story. The other wonderful characters include Charlie, Gabe's father, and Maxie, an elderly woman, and her little dog. Then there's Heinrich, a man Summer meets in the last chapter who has a startling message. Twists and turns of the plot to the very end! I was surprised and satisfied with the outcome.

In conclusion, the multiple viewpoints were smoothly handled, immensely adding to the emotional density of the story, a story I would enjoy reading a second time to catch and appreciate all the nuances. It's a story that would make an excellent film, in a Texas setting that the author knows so well.

What a hot ride!

From chapter one, Carol Kilgore pulls you into an adventure. Summer Newcombe, a woman hiding on Padre Island, notices a fire in the restaurant where she works and saves not only all the patrons but the money as well. Who started the fire? Will she have to move again?

And, above all, how can she get the name of that hunky fire captain, Gabe Duran?

Summer is in the Witness Protection Program because her father testified against the mob and even though her parents are not around anymore, she is still hunted. The character is strong. She is capable of solving her own mysteries but it does provide the book with tension and creates quite a thrill ride.

One thing I really liked about the book was the setting. I've been to Padre Island and I felt I was taken back again. The beach, the heat, the customs and even the language brought you into the story and the place.

From the book "What anyone saw in this godforsaken hellhole was beyond him. Itchy, gritty, and hotter than a naked nun in a hot tub."

A wonderful setting and unique premise for this suspense novel pull you in and keep you reading until The End. Protagonist Summer Newcombe, through no fault of her own, is in the Federal Witness Security Program. After many moves, she hopes she has come to a place she can stay for a long, long time on North Padre Island. Especially after the exciting Corpus Christi Fire Captain rescues her from the burning restaurant where she's just started to work.

But a creepy stalker and a mobster from her father's past have other ideas. Summer needs to evade both of them and is afraid the federal Marshals will move her once more. She hates the thought of leaving the Island and the friends she's making there, to say nothing of the Fire Captain. How she resolves these problems will keep you turning the pages and reading late into the night.

Overall, a fast-paced suspense novel with a good, solid romance to spice it up. I thoroughly enjoyed reading In Name Only. You will, too.
For many years before she landed on Padre Island, Summer Newcombe lived several lives and numerous identities as part of the Witness Protection Program. But finding herself in this particular restaurant when a fire broke out that threatened lives and almost took her own could have been a fluke.

But Summer doesn't really believe in accidents...or coincidences.

However, meeting the hunky firefighter who rescues her after she has risked her life for others is just another in a series of moments that will change her mind about serendipity.

Gabe Duran turns out to be the son of Summer's landlord....and the serendipitous moments just keep happening.

How does the wise old woman named Maxie, who lives in the adjacent condo, figure into the mysterious connections adding up to create a whole new kind of life? Are they part of her mysterious past, or is something else going on?

But not all things coming together in this new place are good things. What is driving the perverted stalker who lives nearby? How will his plot to steal secrets about a life-changing invention somehow connect him to Summer? And who is the man who keeps showing up to supposedly "help" Summer? What is his agenda?

In Name Only is a story about secrets, mysterious mobsters, and how life can sometimes dish up more surprises than anticipated. Romantic moments fit themselves into this scenario as if they are unexpected treats. Some of the surprises toward the end were almost too perfect, but I did enjoy them. Who knew what unexpected connections might form, and seemingly out of nowhere? An enjoyable, somewhat predictable, four star read.
