Feast of Souls Magister Trilogy Book 1 eBook CS Friedman

Those who read and fell in love with C.S. Friedman's The Coldfire Trilogy will not want to miss out on this series. This story, while not quite as strong and memorable as Coldfire, is in many ways similar, featuring dark, vampiric themes, outstanding writing, and fraught with ethical dilemmas.

In this series, magical power comes at a terrible cost. For witches, the source of their power is derived from their own limited life force, and with each magical act, it drains away until there is nothing left and they die. However, with magisters, their power is derived from the life force of OTHERS, which makes their power infinite and murderous. So far, the unlimited power of magisters has belonged only to a few dozen men, who have managed prolong their own lives for centuries at the cost of many innocent lives, and the horrible source of their power is a highly guarded secret among themselves. To their knowledge, no woman has ever been able to tap into the cold, ruthless power of the magisters because of their natural instinct to give life and to nurture...until now. Young Kamala is an abused child of the streets who longs to wield the power of the magisters and will stop at nothing to uncover its source. Through an apprenticeship with an old, reclusive magister who has squirreled himself far away in the woods, Kamala learns the deadly secrets she wishes to know and through her force of will alone, she is able to survive the tests and go on to become the first female magister. Kamala moves secretly among the extremely powerful and brutally selfish world of male magisters until an unfortunate accident leaves her on the run for her life.

This book is extremely well-written, with rich, memorable characters and a carefully structured plot. At times it is a bit slow, but those who enjoy delving into a character's psyche and motives, much like with The Coldfire Trilogy, will really enjoy this series. Overall, I would highly recommend Feast of Souls and the other two books of The Magister Trilogy. I loved them and was very happy with this purchase.

Feast of Souls Magister Trilogy Book 1 eBook CS Friedman Reviews

A fast-paced book fairly stuffed with unique concepts that Friedman succeeds in juggling, so that every piece fits together while the story speeds forward. Among the things that struck me was how tight the book was, with not a single word in excess despite dealing with the number of characters and the many plot twists.

The book includes numerous fantasy tropes, but merely as a scaffolding for an original story about strong characters and the choices they must make in a difficult time. The strength of the characters is another aspect of the book that stood out for me. None of them were mere stock cutouts, despite being cast in somewhat traditional roles, and I can honestly say I could never guess what would happen next or how it would end.

I will definitely be picking up the next volumes as well as everything else Friedman has written. If the quality of her work matches that of this book, then she'll be one of my favorites in the genre.
I listened to the audible audiobook and so appologize if my spellings are wrong. I haven't seen names of people or places in written form.

I thuroughly liked Feast of Souls. I listened to the Coldfire trilogy on in the same audiobook format, and REALLY enjoyed tham. Enjoyed that series more than I've enjoyed a series in a long, long time. (You can read my reviews of those books if you want to see just how much. ) But trust me, I thought they were excellent.) That was my first experience with C.S. Friedman, and I went looking for more. I started with In Conquest Born, since it had the highest review that I could see. However, unlike most readers, I didn't care for it. At all. I found it disjointed, boring, with cardboard, unlikable, unsympathetic, uninteresting characters and stereotypical societies, messesage, themes, ect. So I went next onto Feast of Souls, hoping for something better.

And, I found it.

The world in unusual. Not as unique as the Erna of Coldfire, but facinating nevertheless. The magic system was surprising and unique, I felt, with a complex combination of moral impacts. I found the thoughts and reactions of the magic's welders at times repulsive, but it added to the story. I read some negative comments about the men being evil, selfish, uncaring, ect, and I agree that MOST of the male characters are like that, but most of the men portrayed in the book are Magisters, and it takes a certain type of person to weld the magic of this world given the consequences. And, I found that to be a key partof the story, are these men like this because centuries of welding the magic, and paying the high price which doesn't effect them directly make them into these kinds of people or did they have to be that way to become what they are? Our own history gives examples of cruel people created by ultimate power (real or perceived) over others. I didn't find this exagerated or over the top in this book. It rang rather true to me.

Now, onto the characters themselves. I found none of them to have the complexity or facination of Dameon or Tarrent (again, I listened to them on audiobook, so appologize if I've miss spelled their names) from the Coldfire series. However, I also didn't find the characters of Feast of Souls to be as boring and unsympathetic as I did those of In Conquest Born. They don't do through any complex compromises, decisions or development as those in Coldfire did. There were no complex or contrary relationships. Which I missed, and this is the reason I detracted one star from my review. Stronger, more complex characters would have made the story truly excellent intead of merely good.

I have read a few of the negative reviews saying the story is over the top feminist with men portrayed as evil rappists. Again, many of the men in the story are Magisters who have lived with ultimate power over others for centuries in a role they have come to believe, no to KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT, that no woman can ever possess. They KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT that women don't have what it takes to make the transition and become a Magester, so of course there view of women is less that sympathetic. And, our main female heroine, was horrible abused by men, originally at the behest of her own mother. This has made her who she is, a surviver with nothing to lose and everything to gain, the fire, the need, the anger, to do what others perhaps cannot. And, there are more sympathetic men, her teacher for one. Even Rameriez, a Magester to a great king, has high regard for the queen, her strength, even making the observation that she is 10 times the woman the kind deserves and how others underestimate her greatly, and helpd her when he can even though the king may kill him for doing so. Even the king has some good regard of his queen, and only attacks her at while under the influence of an evil Magister, and it is dscribed as such in the book, actual manifestations the Magister's influence the queen can see. And, of course, we have our good prince who is too good in my opinion, but there he is.

The only other thing that stood out for me was the writing style itself. Adverbs abound. "Darkly" for example, is used A LOT. Sometimes multiple times a chapter. Rain fall darkly, people smile darkly (in once place, both the men in the scene "smiled darkly"), gems glitter darkly, ect. It felt way over used. However, the story was good enough, the characters, while they could have been better, were also good enough that any faults in writing style were minimized for me and did not impact my rating. Although, for readers particularly sensative to such things may feel differently.
