So many stories of incredible courage and suffering have come out of the most devastating war in history and this is yet another well told. Uniquely brave were the submariners, to get into their potential coffin patrol after patrol. I felt like I was in the forward torpedo room with those 20 or so men, the smell, the heat, the fear and resolution to fate. I was struck by the many who were emotionally unable or unwilling to attempt escape, a frightening process for sure, but with sure death the only other option. And for the few who survived, the suffering from the Japanese prison camps must have left them wondering in moments, if it was worth it. The ability of the subhuman conscience to commit deprave acts continues to amaze and depress me every time I read about sanctioned Japanese and German atrocities, but the courage and will to survive ultimately wins out. Amazing men.

You will be holding your breath as the submariners escape from their sunken boat to the surface of the ocean. Most of the few men brave enough to attempt escape were captured and became prisoners of war in brutal conditions. One sailor made the ascent to the surface without the aid of an emergency breathing apparatus. His experience subsequently provided valuable information for the development of escape procedures and equipment.
I heard about this book from a friend, and it sounded like a good book so I bought it. I am not much of a reader in that it takes me a while to read a book. In fact I started reading a book on the Korean War about a year and a half ago and I'm only about half way through it. I started reading this book and finished it in one day. Couldn't put it down once I started reading it. It is the true story of a WWII submarine and it's last mission. I would highly recommend this book.
This book is a true story of how in ww2 a submarine and her crew was sunk (by their own torpedo) and sunk.Their reaction,confusion and horror are all included in vivid detail in this book.

Ironically after 9 men managed to survive they were soon captured and a new horror began.This book chronicles that life,their subsequent rescue and many personal stories which prove the validity of this book.For instance 1 man is on the verge of rescue on the beach after imprisonment only to die at the last possible moment.

Another story in the book is where a us commander opened fire on Japanese survivors adrift in rafts.This and other events I have read about by Americans such as I goes to prove we Americans are sometimes just as hideous in our nature to our fellow human being,s as other people of this world,not just the Germans ,Russians,and the Japanese.Truth,s like these which show the bad side of the story only prove that this book has truth and was well documented by 25 pages of notes,a complete index ,many pictures of the survivors and their life after rescue.

I do not know how to review this book. To say anything even remotely critical would feel like I was insulting the memories of men that suffered and sacrificed so much. The book is a very accurately detailed telling of the final mission of WWII's most decorated submarine, the USS Tang. I read "Unbroken" about a year or so ago and that book moved me greatly. That book was about the experience of one man while this book is really about an entire crew and ultimately the 9 survivors of that crew. In both books there is a horrific trial at sea followed by brutal treatment as POWs. This book is a much quicker read as it only deals with the war time experiences and is light on family history before and after the war. It is also sufficiently detailed in Japanese treatment of prisoners but is not unnecessarily graphic. It is sad to think that these sailors endured so much and yet their sacrifices are almost entirely unknown outside the Navy and the submarine service. This was a book well worth reading.
My first introduction to this author was through the Gary Sinise Foundation when he flew several WWII survivors and family members to the opening of The National WWII Museum. The author does an amazing job of detailing an incident that I don’t remember ever learning. The submarine was named The Tang and her crew was one of the most decorated in the submariner’s history as of the writing of the book. Alex Kershaw was actually able to talk to two members of the crew, who were well into their eighties, and did a lot of digging into the past with help from family members and others.
It’s hard to express what exactly sticks in my mind, because all of it does. These brave men were daring. Perhaps history should be taught more with books like this rather than from a textbook, because it makes it much more real. I would love to go the museum sometime though I am sure it would be an emotional journey, one I would never forget!
Until then, I highly recommend reading books that share about the lives of those in service to our country that we may never be able to thank because they are gone now. However, if we can share the stories of these brave men and their families, we can be reminded of the high cost our freedoms come with and be more thankful. Alex Kershaw has written other books and I plan to read more to share with my sons who love history too! I think Alex’s gift of sharing these true hero stories is wonderful as we sometime forget what a true hero is and isn’t in the society in which we live.
